Niagara Frontier Travel Guide
Encompassing a wide area of the western-most end of New York State, the Niagara Frontier region includes Buffalo, Niagara Falls, the "Twin Cities" of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda, and areas in between.
The largest city of the Niagara Region, Buffalo, is New York States second largest city, and is known by a number of different names, most notably, the "Queen City", and "the City of Good Neighbors".
Unfortunately, the City has lost at least half of it's population with the loss of Bethlehem Steel, and a number of other manufacturing corporations in the past 50 years. The city makes up for it, however, with places such as the Albright Knox Art Gallery, the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, the Buffalo City Hall on Niagara Square, it's radial street plan (similarly planned like that of Washington DC) by Ellicott, the Darwin Martin House, and Delaware Park. Buffalo also has the South Campus for the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Buffalo State College, two nationally known educational institutions.
Niagara Falls is located northwest of the City of Buffalo and is accessed easily by Amtrak Trains, the Niagara portion of the New York State Thruway (I-190N) and by the NFTA Metro System's 40-Grand Island bus.
Niagara Falls has experienced a transformation as of lately, landing the first of three casinos that the Seneca Nation opened, in the previous Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center, and the second in Salamanca, about 30 miles south of Buffalo. The City of Niagara Falls also has a number of other attractions, including the Whirlpool Rapids, the Niagara Power Vista Project (in neighboring Lewiston), and Niagara University.
The "Tonawandas" are also known regionally as "the Twin Cities", because of the City of Tonawanda and City of North Tonawanda. The Cities benefit from being an early port for the Erie Canal, and having the Herschell Carousel Museum, near Wurlitzer Park (NE corner of North Tonawanda).
The City of Tonawanda also is part of the larger Town of Tonawanda, a moderately priced, safe suburb to stay in.
Due east of Niagara Falls is also the City of Lockport.
Lockport is well known as another stop on the Erie Canal, and is part of the Erie Canal Heritage Trail.
